About
Kari Diesen was a Norwegian revue singer and actress, known for a long career in the country’s popular entertainment. Trained early as a dancer, she rose to prominence as a member of major theatrical revues from the 1930s through the 1950s, notably at the cabaret Chat Noir (1937–1953) and the Edderkoppen Theatre (1954–1959). She also worked as an independent artist on radio and television, maintaining a lasting public presence.
Her work spans music, monologue, and film: she recorded hits such as her version of “Hovedøen,” which sold more than 50,000 copies, and performed songs and monologues by writers including Bias Bernhoft and Bjørn Sand. On screen she appeared in 24 films between 1941 and 1985, with prominent roles from the comedy Støv på hjernen (1959) onward and recurring appearances in popular sequels and films.
Awarded and honored for her contribution to the revue genre, she received the Leonard statuette (1971), the Jury’s Honorary Award at Spellemannprisen (1980), and the King’s Medal of Merit. Her legacy remains tied to a repertoire of comic songs and to the representation of women in the Norwegian revue theatre tradition.
