About

Karpal Singh was a prominent Malaysian lawyer and politician, known for his forceful work in criminal litigation and his party leadership. A law graduate of the National University of Singapore, he became noted for defending defendants in drug‑trafficking cases and habeas corpus petitions, earning a reputation as an advocate for vulnerable people and an opponent of the death penalty in many proceedings. He acted in cases of significant national and international attention, representing clients in complex and sensitive appeals.

In politics, he joined the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in 1970 and held legislative office for decades, including national leadership of the party. He served as a federal MP for Bukit Gelugor and earlier represented Jelutong; his parliamentary career was marked by confrontations, suspensions, and legal proceedings, reflecting his combative stance both in court and in the chamber.

Even after a serious road accident in 2005 that left him in a wheelchair, he continued his legal and political activity until his death in 2014. He is remembered for defending procedural rights, for his ability to mobilize opposition forces, and as a central figure in Malaysia’s political and legal spheres.
