About

Frederik VI was the Danish sovereign who served as de facto regent from 1784 and as King of Denmark (1808–1839) and, for a brief period, King of Norway (1808–1814). His political actions marked the transition from ancien régime absolutism to measures influenced by the Enlightenment: as regent he promoted significant social reforms, such as the abolition of the stavnsbånd (a form of peasant serfdom) and the end of death by hanging, and he prohibited Danish participation in the transatlantic slave trade. These initiatives reinforced his reputation as a modernizer within the late context of the Old Regime.

During his reign he faced external challenges and decisive geopolitical consequences: the Napoleonic Wars, the naval defeats culminating in the battles of Copenhagen and, above all, the loss of Norway in 1814 as part of the European reordering at the Congress of Vienna. The postwar period also brought a deep economic and social crisis for the kingdom.

Culturally, Frederik VI encouraged science and education — notably supporting astronomy and establishing primary schools — and instituted the Assemblies of the Estates, in addition to guaranteeing full civil rights to Jews. With no surviving legitimate male heirs, he was succeeded by a relative, leaving an ambivalent legacy of internal reforms and territorial losses.
