About
Hassan II was King of Morocco from 1961 until 1999, a central figure in consolidating the post‑independence state. The son of Mohammed V, he played an active role in the negotiations for independence and held key posts such as crown prince, commander‑in‑chief of the armed forces and deputy prime minister before his coronation. His education combined traditional Islamic instruction with legal studies in France.
Early in his reign he promulgated Morocco’s first constitution in 1962, establishing a constitutional monarchy while reserving broad powers for the crown. He faced regional and domestic crises: the Sand War with Algeria, protests and two coup attempts in the 1970s, events that led to the centralization of power and tighter control over the armed forces.
In 1975 he organized the Green March, which marked Morocco’s intervention in the former Spanish Sahara and triggered a prolonged conflict with the Polisario. His government paired development and modernization policies with an authoritarian regime, a period marked by political repression known as the “Years of Lead.”
When he died in 1999 he was succeeded by Mohammed VI; subsequently the state established a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate violations that occurred during his reign, signaling official recognition of his controversial legacy.
