About
Afonso VI, nicknamed “the Victorious,” was King of Portugal and the Algarves from 1656 to 1683, succeeding as the second monarch of the House of Braganza. The son of D. João IV and Luísa de Gusmão, he ascended the throne very young and remained under his mother’s regency until 1662, when he took power with the support of his favorite, the Count of Castelo Melhor. His reign coincided with the end of the Restoration War: under his crown Spain recognized Portuguese independence, and dynastic alliances with France were sought, reflected in his marriage to Maria Francisca of Savoy.
Afonso suffered physical and neurological health problems from childhood that affected his ability to govern and his personal life. Those political and medical weaknesses fueled palace intrigues and, in 1668, his brother Pedro, Duke of Beja, declared him incapable, assumed the regency and annulled the king’s marriage. From that point on Afonso lived in a state of seclusion and gradually lost political prominence.
Historically, Afonso VI’s reign marks the consolidation of Portuguese independence after decades of conflict, but it also reveals the internal weaknesses of the restored monarchy: factional disputes, dependence on favorites and the decisive role of the royal family in succession and the control of seigneurial estates.
