About

Carol II of Romania (born Carol Caraiman) was monarch from 1930 until his forced abdication in September 1940. The son of Ferdinand I and Princess Marie of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, he was notable as the first Hohenzollern sovereign born and raised in Romania, with Romanian as his first language and educated in the Orthodox faith. A career military officer, he reached the rank of marshal in 1930.

His reign was marked by strong personalization of power and direct intervention in political life: upon returning to the throne in 1930 he surrounded himself with a business and financial elite — the so-called “Camarilă” — and sought to weaken the traditional parties by appointing governments of personalities and increasingly centralizing authority. He supported industrialization policies that favored heavy industry at the expense of agriculture and expanded the crown’s control over economic sectors.

On the social and political front, he confronted the rise of extremist movements and responded with authoritarian instruments, including a state youth organization. His court and personal scandals (marriages and lovers) damaged his public image and influenced political alliances. Under his direct leadership, foreign policy gradually shifted away from France toward a more independent stance.

Carol II’s legacy is ambivalent: industrial modernization and state centralization accompanied by corruption, clientelism, and erosion of democratic institutions that helped set the stage for the crisis of 1940.
