About

Kornelis Heiko Miskotte was a Dutch Protestant theologian and a prominent figure in twentieth‑century dialectical theology. Influenced by neo‑Kantian currents and Protestant ethics, he combined biblical reflections—especially on the Old Testament—with social concerns, integrating readings of Jewish and socialist thinkers into his work. He became known nationally for radio sermons and for defending a critical Christianity in the face of modern nihilism.

As a pastor and intellectual, Miskotte published biblical studies, essays, and dissertations that introduced Dutch readers to authors such as Rosenzweig and Buber; his thesis on the Jewish religion earned recognition within the Jewish community itself. In the 1930s he took a firm stand against National Socialism, describing Nazism as a new paganism and joining the resistance, at times sheltering persecuted Jews.

After World War II he was appointed professor at Leiden University, where he taught the history of Reformed theology, founded the journal In De Waagschaal, and promoted liturgical renewal. His writings and archive—preserved in Leiden—have influenced subsequent theological scholarship; chairs and conferences devoted to the reception of his thought were established in his honor.
