About
Lady Mary Victoria Douglas-Hamilton was a Scottish-born aristocrat, a member of the Hamilton family and a connecting figure among the British, German and French royal houses of the 19th century. The daughter of the 11th Duke of Hamilton and a Baden princess, she was related to European monarchs and nobles, which made her a suitable candidate for international dynastic alliances.
In 1869 she married Prince Albert of Monaco, the heir apparent; the union, arranged for dynastic reasons, was brief and unhappy: she left Monaco a few months later and bore a son, Louis (the future Louis II), outside of conjugal life. The marriage was dissolved before Albert’s accession, which is why Mary Victoria never served as princess consort of Monaco.
In 1880 she married Tassilo Festetics de Tolna and settled in Hungary, where she oversaw works and improvements at Festetics Palace in Keszthely and enriched the local library collection with volumes from the Hamilton family holdings. She remained there for the rest of her life and was buried in the Festetics mausoleum on the shores of Lake Balaton.
Her legacy endures both through her descendants — including the line that led to Prince Louis II of Monaco — and through the cultural and heritage influence she left on Hungarian aristocratic patrimony.
