About

Larry Blyden was an American actor, producer and theatre director who also became known as a game-show host. Trained in the arts and raised on the New York scene, he rose to prominence on Broadway from the late 1940s, taking both leading and supporting roles in commercial and experimental productions. His acting career included long runs in successful plays, replacements in major productions and forays into film and television.

As a producer and performer, Blyden won critical recognition when he produced and played Hysterium in the revival of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a role that earned him the 1972 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. Around the same time he broadened his public profile by hosting the syndicated version of the game show What's My Line?.

Over the course of his career he also directed Broadway productions and took part in reinterpretations and contemporary comedies, maintaining connections with figures such as Phil Silvers and Stephen Sondheim and companies like the Yale Repertory Theatre. He is remembered for his versatility across acting, producing and directing, and for his prominent presence in American musical theatre and television.
