About

William Larimer “Larry” Mellon Jr. was an American philanthropist and physician best known for founding and directing a missionary hospital in Haiti. Born into the influential Mellon family, whose fortune was linked to companies such as Gulf Oil and BNY Mellon, Mellon left a comfortable life to pursue medicine and humanitarian work. He served in the OSS during World War II, tried a career in the family businesses, and only later chose to study medicine, graduating in his forties.

Influenced by the example of Albert Schweitzer, Mellon and his wife Gwen Grant, who was also trained in laboratory work, established the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti in Deschapelles in 1956. The institution became a local reference for medical care and public health projects in an underserved region, reflecting a long-term commitment to clinical and community care.

His public legacy is defined by the shift from heir to active provider of grassroots global health, combining personal resources and institutional work to sustain a medical service in a context of need. Mellon died in Deschapelles in 1989.
