About

Lee Trevino is one of the great names in American golf, known for his successful career and as an icon of the Mexican‑American community. A professional since the 1960s, he won 29 PGA Tour events, including six majors — two U.S. Opens, two Open Championships and two PGA Championships; the Masters was the only major he never won. His career peaked in the early 1970s, when he rivaled Jack Nicklaus, led the money list in 1970 and enjoyed a remarkable run of victories in 1971, a year in which he received honors such as the Hickok Belt and Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year.

Raised in a Mexican‑heritage family in Texas and trained as a caddie, Trevino developed a compact swing and a controlled fade that became his trademark, shaped by practice in rudimentary conditions. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he used the competitive experience gained in military tournaments as a springboard to the professional circuit. Inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1981, his legacy endures both for his sporting achievements and for his symbolic role as a representative and inspiration for players of Hispanic background.
