About
Les McKeown was a Scottish singer, best known as the lead voice of the Bay City Rollers during the group's commercial peak in the 1970s. His entry into the band in 1973 coincided with re-recordings of key tracks such as "Remember (Sha-La-La-La)" and "Saturday Night," the latter reaching number one on the charts in the U.S. and Canada and playing a decisive role in the group's international expansion.
With McKeown as frontman, the Bay City Rollers released hugely successful albums in the U.K., including Rollin' (1974) and Once Upon a Star (1975), and scored several prominent singles such as "Shang-a-Lang," "Bye, Bye, Baby," and "Give a Little Love." The group became a teen pop phenomenon and one of the best-selling acts of the era.
McKeown left the band in 1978 to pursue a solo career, finding particular success in Japan, and took part in several reunions beginning in 1996 and in new line-ups between 2015 and 2018. He was also involved in legal disputes over copyrights and royalties relating to the band's most successful period.
His legacy is tied to the image and sound that defined 1970s teen pop-rock, when the Bay City Rollers were estimated to have sold hundreds of millions of records worldwide.
