About

María Dolores “Lola” Flores Ruiz was a Spanish singer, dancer (bailaora) and actress who became a leading figure of Andalusian culture in the twentieth century. Born in Jerez de la Frontera, she stood out from a young age for her stage personality and a repertoire that blended flamenco, copla, rumba and ranchera, scoring hits such as “La Zarzamora” and “La Niña de Fuego.”

Her film and theatre career reached wide prominence from the 1940s onward; in 1951 she signed a record contract with the production company Suevia Films, which sent her on tours through Latin America and the United States and greatly increased her media exposure. She appeared in more than 35 films and recorded over twenty albums, establishing an emblematic artistic image nicknamed “la Faraona.”

Also known for a personal life marked by public artistic and family relationships, Flores became the matriarch of a dynasty of Spanish performers. Her cultural legacy endures in tributes, biographies and in the international diffusion of Andalusian folklore.
