About

Lon McCallister (Herbert Alonzo McCallister Jr.) was an American actor active mainly from the 1930s through the 1950s, known for playing ingenuous, rural-accented youths often in outdoor settings involving horses and dogs. He broke to wide public notice in Stage Door Canteen (1941) and rose to prominence as the star of Home in Indiana (1944), which led to a contract with 20th Century Fox. His youthful looks and short stature, however, limited his transition to adult roles.

Over the course of his career he appeared in films such as Winged Victory (1944), The Red House (1947), Thunder in the Valley (1947), The Big Cat (1949) and The Story of Seabiscuit (1949), as well as in television series and TV movies. He co‑produced the revue Lend an Ear with William Eythe, which helped launch Carol Channing.

He retired from the screen in 1953 and became a real estate manager, achieving financial success. He maintained a personal and professional relationship with William Eythe until Eythe’s death in 1957. In later interviews he emphasized that he chose private life over a prolonged film career.
