About
Maurits Cornelis Escher was a Dutch graphic artist whose work became known for exploring impossible perspectives, regular plane fillings, and visual metamorphoses. He worked mainly in woodcut, lithography, and mezzotint, producing compositions that combine geometric rigor with imagination, often using patterns that gradually transform into other forms.
Inspired by travels in Italy and by admiration for the mosaics of the Alhambra, Escher developed an interest in symmetries and tessellations, applying geometric transformations — translations, rotations, and glide reflections — to create interlocking figures that cover the plane without gaps. His approach combined artistic sensibility with mathematical ideas and was also influenced by the work of George Pólya.
He lived in several European countries during his life before returning to the Netherlands, where he concentrated his production. His work became notable for provoking optical illusions and spatial paradoxes that challenge the perception of two- versus three-dimensional space. Today Escher is recognized both in artistic circles and for his role in popularizing geometric and symmetry concepts.
