About

Mae West was an American actress, writer, comedian and sex symbol whose irreverent screen persona left a mark on twentieth-century entertainment. She began performing in vaudeville as a child, standing out for her stage presence, distinctive voice and ironic dialogue; she created dance numbers such as the "shimmy" and wrote plays and screenplays that used provocative humor and sexuality.

Her theatrical breakthrough came with Sex (1926) and Diamond Lil (1928), controversial texts for their time that turned her into a public lightning rod: she was even tried for "corrupting the youth," yet retained a loyal audience and long, successful runs. In 1932 she moved to Hollywood, signing with Paramount and achieving major box-office success in films such as She Done Him Wrong and I’m No Angel, in which she also collaborated as a screenwriter.

Over her career she became a symbol of popular sensuality and a constant presence in photographs and mass culture; in the 1950s she cut back on film work but continued to perform in shows and make recordings. Her legacy endures in entertainment history as a pioneer of sexualized comedy and of female self-assertion on stage and screen.
