About
Ted Hughes was a British poet and writer, widely recognized as one of the most important poetic voices of his generation. His early work drew critical attention with The Hawk in the Rain (1957), but it was the collection Crow (1970) that defined his career, presenting a totemic cosmology of the Crow and a powerful, often unsettling vision of nature and human destiny. The poems blend apocalyptic imagery, surrealism and direct language, underscoring Hughes’s distinctiveness in the English poetic tradition.
In addition to poetry for adults, Hughes wrote for children—most notably The Iron Man—and produced translations and classical adaptations, such as his Tales from Ovid (1997). He also worked in critical prose and essays, notably Shakespeare and the Goddess of Complete Being (1992), a book that divided opinion for its originality and personal slant.
Appointed Poet Laureate in 1984, Hughes held the post until his death in 1998. His influence extends through his exploration of the wildness of nature, myth and the unconscious, and through collaborations with artists and editors who valued the book as an object. His work remains central to twentieth‑century English literature.
