Mahathir bin Mohamad is a Malaysian politician and physician whose career shaped contemporary Malaysian history. He served as prime minister for 22 years (1981–2003) and again from 2018 to 2020, becoming a central figure in the country’s economic transformation by leading the shift from an agricultural economy to an industrial and technological hub. During his administration, megaprojects such as the Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and other infrastructure crucial to national modernization were developed.
Author of vigorous development policies and the ambitious "Vision 2020," Mahathir also played an influential role in regional politics. His career includes the founding of and involvement with state-owned enterprises such as Proton, as well as shifts between political parties that culminated in his return to power in 2018, when he led the coalition that ended six decades of continuous rule by a single alliance.
Recognized internationally, he has been named among influential leaders by global publications. A controversial figure in some episodes — including breakups with former allies — he left a lasting legacy in Malaysia’s economy, infrastructure and political life.
