About

Marcello Mastroianni was one of the foremost actors of Italian cinema, with a career spanning almost five decades and more than 140 films. He became a central figure in post‑war cinema, achieving international recognition especially through his collaborations with Federico Fellini in La Dolce Vita and 8½, films that established his image as an icon of the so‑called “Latin lover” and extended his fame beyond Italy.

Trained in the theatre and discovered on film by directors such as Luchino Visconti, Mastroianni moved easily between comedies, dramas and auteur works. He received major awards, including the Nastro d'Argento and the BAFTA, was nominated for Oscars and twice won the Coppa Volpi at the Venice Film Festival, underscoring both his versatility and the critical esteem for his work.

Over the course of his career he worked with figures such as Vittorio De Sica, Ettore Scola and Manoel de Oliveira, and formed a memorable screen partnership with Sophia Loren. In his later years he worked mainly abroad; his filmography and final interviews are often cited as evidence of an artistic legacy defined by interpretive elegance, restrained melancholy and a lasting influence on European cinema.
