About

Mario Riva (Mario Bonavolontà) was a central figure in Italian entertainment in the 1940s and 1950s, known as a presenter, actor, and television pioneer. He began his career in radio, revue theatre and film, appearing in more than fifty movies and forming one of the era’s most popular comic duos with Riccardo Billi. He worked with acclaimed names such as Totò, Alberto Sordi and Vittorio De Sica, and took part in the major theatrical revues by Garinei and Giovannini.

His greatest fame came with Il Musichiere (1957–1960), the first musical quiz show on Italian television, which drew massive audiences and helped shape the format of Saturday-night TV entertainment. In addition to hosting the contest, Riva was known for his interactions with national and international stars, contributing to the spread of a new televisual style in the emerging medium.

His career was tragically cut short by a stage accident in 1960 during the finale of Il Musichiere at the Arena di Verona; subsequent medical complications caused his death and provoked widespread public mourning. His legacy is tied to the innovation of televised variety and to the establishment of the first major audiences for Italian TV.
