About

Martha “Patsy” Randolph was a central figure in the Jefferson family and played significant social and administrative roles on the family estates in the early 19th century. The eldest daughter of Thomas Jefferson, she received a refined education in France, studying at the Abbey of Pentemont; she spoke four languages and absorbed the customs and cultural repertoire of the European elite, which prepared her to manage household affairs and the education of her children.

She married Thomas Mann Randolph Jr., who served as governor of Virginia from 1819 to 1822, and acted as state first lady and as an informal hostess at the White House during part of her father’s presidency. She supervised operations at the Varina, Edge Hill and Monticello estates, maintained extensive correspondence with Jefferson, and provided him with emotional support during his political career.

After her father’s death she inherited debts that helped trigger the sale of enslaved people and the loss of family properties, events that marked the Jeffersons’ and Randolphs’ economic decline. She was the mother of twelve children, many of whom achieved their own prominence, and left a legacy tied to the preservation — and the contradictions — of her family’s heritage and of the social and cultural life of Virginia’s elite.
