Martie Maguire is an American musician, known as a cofounder of the group that became one of the most commercially successful female trios in contemporary country music. A multi-instrumentalist recognized with awards since her teens, she is noted for her fiddle playing and also performs mandolin, viola, upright bass and guitar, in addition to providing consistent backing vocals and harmonies.
As a songwriter and arranger, Maguire has written or co-written several of the group’s high-profile songs, including hits that brought her industry recognition and awards. Her string arrangements broadened the band’s sonic palette, weaving roots, rock and blues influences into their original country/bluegrass base.
Maguire’s professional career includes founding the group on the bluegrass circuit and guiding its transition to the mainstream, with dozens of charting singles, high-selling albums and multiple Grammy Awards. She also created the side project Court Yard Hounds with her sister Emily, reaffirming her creative role outside the main lineup.
Beyond her artistic work, Maguire became known for taking firm stands during the band’s controversial moments, maintaining a coherent artistic identity and a legacy that influenced generations of instrumentalists and songwriters in the genre.
