About
Mary Baker Eddy was an American theologian and religious leader, known for founding the Christian Science movement and the First Church of Christ, Scientist. Her central work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, provided the doctrinal foundation for a system of spiritual healing that attributed illness to mental states and proposed prayer and a correct understanding of God as means of restoration.
Throughout the late nineteenth century, Eddy organized institutions to spread her ideas: she established the Mother Church in Boston and founded the Massachusetts Metaphysical College, which trained practitioners devoted to “healing by prayer.” Under her leadership, the movement expanded internationally and institutionalized methods of teaching and religious practice.
A controversial figure for scholars of religion and medicine, Eddy left a lasting legacy through churches, publications, and the Mary Baker Eddy Library, recognized by the U.S. Congress for its archives and historical contributions. Her impact extends to nineteenth-century American religious history, influencing debates about healing, faith, and religious authority.
