Mary Hayward Weir

About

Mary Hayward Weir (1915–1968) was an American steel heiress and socialite, best known for her marriage to industrialist Ernest T. Weir and later to writer Jerzy Kosiński. While working as a secretary at National Steel she met Ernest Weir, forty years her senior; they married in 1941 and she was widowed in 1957. One son, David Weir, was born of that marriage.

Throughout her life she was active in volunteer work and traveled internationally, maintaining a presence in influential social circles in the United States. In 1958 the public library in Weirton, West Virginia was named in her honor, a public recognition of her ties to the local community.

She married Jerzy Kosiński in 1962; their relationship later inspired passages in his fiction, and Kosiński dedicated The Painted Bird (1965) to her. Weir struggled with mental health and addiction, was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and died in 1968. Her legacy remains associated with local philanthropy and the social visibility tied to the steel industry.
