Matthijs Maris (1839–1917) was a Dutch painter, printmaker and lithographer, known as a member of the Maris brothers and for moving from a phase associated with the Hague School to a distinctive lyricism influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. Trained initially at the The Hague Academy and with local masters, he travelled and worked alongside colleagues such as Gerard Bilders and Anton Mauve; stays in Antwerp, Cologne and Paris broadened his references, notably drawing on German romanticism.
Maris’s career had setbacks: works shown on his return to the Netherlands met with cool reception, and life in Paris brought poverty and isolation. In 1877 he moved to London, where he developed a dreamlike, introspective language featuring fairy-tale scenes, enchanted castles and ethereal portraits—particularly of children—rendered in layers of ashen tones with a faded, veil- or mist-like effect.
His output is notable for its subjective atmosphere and glazing technique, which set him apart from his more naturalistic brothers and secured him a distinct place in late nineteenth-century European art. He died in London in 1917, leaving works dispersed across public and private collections and recognition for the poetic singularity of his repertoire.
