Michael Ann Holly

About

Michael Ann Holly is an American art historian recognized for her contributions to historiography and the theory of art history. Trained in the arts and holding a PhD in art history from Cornell, she spent the early part of her career on scholarly publishing before entering academia, where she combined teaching and research focused on critical reflection about the discipline’s methods and narratives.

Over the course of her career, Holly worked at prominent academic and cultural institutions: she taught in art schools and, for more than a decade, was on the faculty of the University of Rochester, where she co-founded a graduate program in Visual and Cultural Studies. She later served as director of the Research and Academic Program at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, a position from which she became director emerita upon retirement.

Her publications include books and edited volumes on visual theory, historical imagination, and research methods in the visual arts — among them studies of Erwin Panofsky and collections that gather debates on visual culture and historiographic practice. She has received fellowships and awards from organizations such as the NEH, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Getty, and the Mellon Foundation, reflecting her influence on critical studies of images, research, and teaching in art history.

As a teacher and organizer of academic programs, Holly has left a legacy in the training of generations of art historians and in the establishment of interdisciplinary approaches that connect theory, archives, and curatorial practice.
