About

Verónica Michelle Bachelet Jeria is a Chilean physician and politician, known for being the first woman to lead the State of Chile, serving two presidential terms (2006–2010 and 2014–2018). Trained in medicine at the University of Chile, her career was shaped by activism in the Socialist Party and by personal and family experiences linked to the period of the military dictatorship, which influenced her public work.

Before becoming president, Bachelet held prominent posts in the democratic transition government: Minister of Health (2000–2002) and the country’s first female Minister of Defense (2002–2004), roles that brought her national recognition. Her presidential administrations emphasized social reforms, prioritizing health, education and pensions, and included efforts to reduce inequality.

At the international level, Bachelet held significant roles, including serving as the first pro tempore president of the Union of South American Nations and later occupying positions within United Nations bodies, among them leadership of agencies focused on human rights and gender equality. Her legacy combines advances in social policy with intense political debates that marked her second term.
