About
Miguel León-Portilla was one of the most important Mexican anthropologists and historians devoted to the study of Nahua peoples and Mesoamerican culture. His scholarly work — including the celebrated Aztec Thought and Culture and the collection Visión de los vencidos (The Broken Spears) — translated and brought to light Náhuatl and colonial sources, making indigenous accounts central to the understanding of the conquest and Aztec cosmology.
León-Portilla led a movement to reassess Nahua literature and spirituality, drawing pre-Columbian and colonial texts into closer conversation and emphasizing the cultural continuity of contemporary Náhuatl. His studies on Bernardino de Sahagún and editions of Nahua wills and poems broadened access to primary documents and helped foster the New Philology.
Beyond his work on the Nahuas, he published studies on Mesoamerican spirituality, pre-Columbian literature, and the ethnography of the Baja California Peninsula. Recognized with national and international grants and awards, he also served in organizations such as UNESCO, contributing to the preservation of pre-Columbian heritage.
His academic legacy lies in recognizing the indigenous voice within historical narratives and in training generations of scholars of Mesoamerican languages, literature, and religiosity.
