About

Michael Francis “Mike” Troy was an American competitive swimmer, two-time Olympic champion and world record holder in swimming events. His competitive career peaked between 1959 and 1960 under coach Doc Counsilman at Indiana University, where he established himself particularly in the butterfly. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, he was part of the U.S. team that won the 4×200 m freestyle relay and took gold in the 200 m butterfly, his signature event.

Troy broke the 200 m butterfly world record six consecutive times, maintaining dominance in the event until 1961. In recognition of his achievements, he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1971. After his collegiate career he joined the United States Navy, completed BUD/S training and served with Underwater Demolition Team 11, seeing notable action during the Vietnam War.

After leaving active service he settled in the San Diego area as a real estate broker and swim coach, developing high-level athletes and later becoming co-owner of a swim school in Arizona. He also served in sports administration, including roles with the international section of the Olympic Committee and as a director of the U.S. Paralympic swimming team.
