About

Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik was one of the Soviet Union’s leading chess players of the 20th century, a three-time world champion whose reigns spanned three periods (1948–57, 1958–60, 1961–63). Known for disciplined study and meticulous preparation, he excelled in positional technique and endgame mastery, favoring solid repertoires such as the Nimzo-Indian, the Slav Defense and the French Defense.

His early rise included victories in the Soviet Championship and successes at major international tournaments, such as Moscow (1935) and Nottingham (1936), as well as a notable performance at the AVRO tournament (1938). World War II interrupted his peak competitive years, a circumstance often noted in assessments of his career.

Beyond his play, Botvinnik left a lasting legacy as a theorist, author of chess works and a pioneer in linking computing to the game, developing programs and ideas about long-term planning. He was also influential as a coach — among his pupils were figures who went on to dominate Soviet and world chess.

His public image combined longevity at the top with a scientific approach to chess: preparation, analysis and teaching that shaped later generations and contributed to the professionalization of the intellectual sport.
