About

Milva, stage name of Maria Ilva Biolcati, was an Italian singer and actress whose international career encompassed popular music, theatre, and television. She rose to prominence in the 1960s after establishing herself on the Sanremo Festival circuit and scoring hits with traditionally melodic songs; the Italian press nicknamed her La Rossa and La Pantera di Goro, references to her image and origins.

Over decades she collaborated with major composers and arrangers — including Ennio Morricone, Mikis Theodorakis, Vangelis, and Luciano Berio — and covered a wide range of repertoire, from tango to songs in foreign languages, recording albums in French, German, Japanese, and other tongues. Her discography is notable for its sheer volume: she holds a record number of released albums, including studio, live, and compilation releases.

In musical theatre and opera she distinguished herself in work with figures such as Giorgio Strehler and in appearances at important houses like La Scala, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and the Opéra de Paris. In the 1970s and 1980s she achieved great popularity particularly in Germany and France, with international tours and multiple platinum records.

Her artistic legacy includes linguistic versatility, a fusion of popular song and classical repertoire, and a stage presence recognized across Europe and beyond. She died in 2021, leaving a vast discography and performance recordings that shaped postwar Italian music.
