About

Moses Mendelssohn was a German-Jewish philosopher of the Enlightenment, recognized as a forerunner of the Haskalah—the movement for the cultural and intellectual renewal of Judaism in Europe. Self-taught in philosophy and languages, he was noted for bringing classical philosophical problems into cultured German and for his role as a public intellectual in eighteenth-century Berlin.

His writings and public presence brought Jewish thought closer to European philosophical debate; the success of Phädon, or On the Immortality of the Soul (1767) cemented his reputation and made him a central figure in intellectual life, earning him the nickname “the German Socrates.” He maintained relationships with prominent cultural figures such as Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, which increased his visibility.

Throughout his career Mendelssohn balanced metaphysical reflection with public defense of Judaism against Christian critics, engaging in controversies over faith and reason. He received official recognition in Berlin, which afforded him a measure of legal protection.

His legacy lies in mediating between Jewish tradition and Enlightened culture: he opened intellectual avenues for integration and for the educational and religious modernization of Jewish communities in Europe.
