About

Muhammad Yunus is a Bengali economist and social entrepreneur internationally recognized for developing and institutionalizing the concept of microcredit. A university professor with a doctorate from Vanderbilt, Yunus identified in the 1970s the impossibility for rural poor to access formal credit and, after experimental loans in Jobra, founded the Grameen Bank, aimed primarily at low-income women.

The Grameen experience, based on loans without formal collateral and strong community proximity, expanded to millions of beneficiaries and achieved high repayment rates, becoming a global reference in financial inclusion. In 2006, Yunus and the Grameen Bank were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for promoting economic and social development “from below.”

Throughout his career, Yunus framed microfinance as a tool for poverty reduction and the promotion of economic autonomy, arguing that access to credit is a human right. His work includes the book Banker to the Poor and has left a lasting legacy in microcredit policy and practices supporting vulnerable populations.
