About

Najat Vallaud‑Belkacem is a Moroccan‑born jurist and politician who became a naturalized French citizen and is affiliated with the Socialist Party. She rose to national prominence by joining socialist campaign teams and governments, serving as a spokesperson in presidential campaigns and holding local executive roles in Lyon and on the Rhône‑Alpes regional council.

At the national level, she held several portfolios during François Hollande’s presidency: Minister for Women’s Rights, Minister for the City, Youth and Sports, and, from 2014 to 2017, she was the first woman to head the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Research. Her public work included initiatives against sexism, proposals to combat prostitution and symbolic measures to promote gender equality.

After leaving public office in 2017, Vallaud‑Belkacem moved into the private and nonprofit sectors: she became head of Global Affairs at Ipsos, director of the One Campaign in France and president of the association France terre d’asile. She also works in academia and on programs related to gender equality, remaining active in debates on public policy and civil rights.
