About

Nancy Mitford was an English novelist, biographer, and journalist, known for her perceptive and humorous portrayals of Anglo‑French aristocratic life in the interwar and postwar periods. A member of the Mitford family and of the Bright Young People circle, she rose to prominence with semi‑autobiographical novels such as The Pursuit of Love (1945) and Love in a Cold Climate (1949), which established her literary reputation by examining the manners, affections, and hypocrisies of high society.

Beyond fiction, Mitford built a notable career as an author of popular biographies and historical studies, including works on Madame de Pompadour, Voltaire, and Louis XIV, which earned her critical esteem in subsequent decades. She also published essays and collections of letters, and, with a satirical tone, introduced the linguistic distinction between “U” and “non‑U,” which came to influence discussions of class and language in Britain.

Settled in France after the Second World War, Mitford maintained an active correspondence and ties with the English literary scene. Her work left a lasting legacy through its blend of stylistic elegance, social irony, and interest in historical figures, although her later years were marked by health problems.
