About

Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli was a Florentine diplomat, historian, and political theorist of the Renaissance, recognized as one of the key figures in modern political thought. His best-known work, The Prince, examines the exercise of power with realism, outlining practical strategies — including cruel or deceitful measures — that a ruler might use to gain and retain control. This stance made his name synonymous with political pragmatism and provoked enduring controversy over the ethics of his advice.

He served as secretary of the Second Chancery of the Florentine Republic, a position in which he took part in diplomatic missions and advised on military and domestic matters; his hands-on experience in administration and negotiation fed into his writings and his reflections on virtù and fortuna. Influenced by classical authors such as Titus Livius, he reworked ancient concepts in a modern key, linking theory with historical experience.

The fragmented Italian political context — among condottieri, regional powers, and foreign interventions — shaped his analyses of instability, alliances, and state security. Machiavelli’s legacy remains central to political science, intellectual history, and theory of the state, both for his analytical originality and for the moral debate his proposals continue to provoke.
