About

Eunice Kathleen Waymon was an American pianist, singer, songwriter, and civil rights activist. Although closely associated with jazz, she worked across classical music, blues, folk, soul, R&B, gospel, and pop.

She adopted the stage name Nina Simone at twenty so that she could sing blues without her parents' knowledge while training as a classical pianist in bars in New York, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City. She also spoke out against racism during the civil-rights movement of the 1960s and sang at Martin Luther King Jr.'s funeral.

After being prevented from pursuing a major concert career through the conservatory, she remained in New York before moving to Atlantic City. There, while working as a bar pianist, she began singing at her employer's request and launched the career that made her known internationally.

She performed songs in many styles and composed her own work. One of the first Black artists admitted to Juilliard, she made "Mississippi Goddam" an anthem of the civil-rights movement.
