About

Norbert Wiener was an American mathematician and theorist whose work founded cybernetics, a discipline linking control, communication, and information processing in mechanical, electrical, and biological systems. Educated very young and influenced by scholars such as David Hilbert, Wiener made central contributions to harmonic analysis, the theory of time series, and statistical physics, studying phenomena like Brownian motion and developing statistical methods for stochastic processes.

During World War II he worked on practical problems of weapon guidance and, after the war, systematized concepts that connect signal, control, and feedback. His book Cybernetics (1948) consolidated the notions of negative and positive feedback as principles of self‑regulation, influencing fields from automation to biology and computer science.

A participant in the Macy Conferences, Wiener engaged with scientists from various fields, helping to foster an intellectual environment conducive to the emergence of automata and the application of information theory to complex systems. His later work addressed the social and human implications of technology, leaving a lasting legacy for adaptive control, information theory, and robotics.
