Norman Jewison was a Canadian filmmaker known for directing and producing films that addressed contemporary social and political issues, making controversial subjects accessible to a wide audience. Over a film career spanning more than four decades, he earned three Academy Award nominations for Best Director for In the Heat of the Night (1967), Fiddler on the Roof (1971) and Moonstruck (1987), as well as numerous other nominations and awards, including the Academy’s Thalberg Memorial Award in 1999.

His career began in television — at the CBC and later at NBC — before he moved into feature films in 1962 with 40 Pounds of Trouble. Among his most notable films are The Cincinnati Kid, The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming, The Thomas Crown Affair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Rollerball, ...And Justice for All, A Soldier's Story, Agnes of God and The Hurricane. In the Heat of the Night was distinguished by its treatment of racism in the U.S. South and won the Oscar for Best Picture.

In 1988 he founded the Canadian Film Centre, reinforcing his role in the development of Canadian cinema. He also received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award and served as chancellor of Victoria University. His professional practice and legacy include both the training of new talent and a filmography marked by social engagement and popular appeal.
