About

Sven Olof Joachim Palme was a prominent Swedish politician and leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Workers’ Party who served as Prime Minister of Sweden in two terms (1969–1976 and 1982–1986). A leading figure in Scandinavian social democracy, he was known for promoting a model that combined a market economy with a robust welfare state, during whose governments Sweden enjoyed high levels of social provision and economic stability.

Internationally, Palme was an active and controversial voice: he pursued a policy of non‑alignment between the superpowers, criticized both the United States and the Soviet Union, and supported liberation movements in the Third World. He was the first Western head of government to visit revolutionary Cuba and acted as a UN special mediator during the Iran–Iraq War. He also distinguished himself as a staunch opponent of apartheid and of military intervention in Vietnam.

His assassination in 1986, as he left a cinema in Stockholm, placed his death among the most dramatic episodes in Swedish politics, with responsibility and motives that remain debated. His legacy remains linked to the consolidation of the Swedish welfare state, independent diplomacy, and a vigorous, polarizing public role on international issues.
