About

Oscar Wilde was an Irish writer, poet and playwright whose wit and sartorial flair made him a central figure in Victorian cultural life. Educated in Dublin and at Oxford, he distinguished himself as a classicist and promoter of aestheticism, defending the presence of beauty in everyday life through lectures and essays. His work includes epigrams, criticism, a novel — The Picture of Dorian Gray — and stage plays that established him as one of London’s most popular dramatists in the 1890s.

Wilde examined themes such as beauty, decadence, social hypocrisy and taboo, combining aesthetic refinement with social critique in texts and comedies aimed at discerning audiences. In 1891 he wrote Salomé in French; in 1892 he published The Soul of Man under Socialism, his principal political text. His career, however, was cut short by prosecution and conviction for “gross indecency” in 1895, an episode that exposed Victorian prejudices and led to two years’ imprisonment.

After his release he lived in exile in Paris, where he wrote De Profundis and The Ballad of Reading Gaol. He died in 1900, his public reputation ruined but his literary legacy enduring: his plays, aphorisms and critique of Victorian moralism remain influential in debates about art, sexuality and society.
