About

Paolina Leopardi was an Italian writer and translator and a member of the well-known Leopardi family. She collaborated with her father on the editing of periodicals and translated from French, notably publishing an Italian version of Expédition nocturne autour de ma chambre and a biography of Mozart, a work that gathered diverse sources and was issued in carefully produced editions of prestige.

She grew up in a restricted household under the strict family control that shaped the upbringing of the Leopardi siblings. That seclusion affected both her personal choices — she experienced recurring frustrations and attempted marriages — and her intellectual output, which focused mainly on translation and literary criticism.

After the death of her parents she gained greater autonomy, moving between several Italian cities and maintaining an extensive correspondence with friends and relatives that records her sensibility and inner life. She died in Pisa in 1869; her works and letters were preserved in later editions, contributing to the historical and literary understanding of the Leopardi family and the Italian cultural milieu of the nineteenth century.
