Pat Montandon

About

Pat Montandon (Patricia Montandon) was an American author, social hostess, activist, and philanthropist known for combining public visibility with civic engagement. She became known in San Francisco in the 1960s for her memorable parties and roundtable luncheons that brought together artists, writers, and political figures, becoming an influential figure in cultural and social circles. She also worked as a columnist and television host, roles that broadened her media presence.

The author of several books, including the bestseller How to Be a Party Girl, Montandon promoted social causes throughout her life: she advocated for women’s right to keep their surnames after marriage and conceived child-focused peace initiatives. In 1979 she organized a Napa Valley wine auction, directing part of the proceeds to local hospitals.

A founder of organizations such as Children as Teachers for Peace (later Children as the Peacemakers) and, later, Peace To The Planet, she traveled internationally with children, collected letters opposing nuclear proliferation, and created the Banner of Hope, a memorial to children killed by war. She received the UN Peace Messenger award in 1987 and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in consecutive years, reflecting international recognition.
