About

Patricio Aylwin Azócar was a Chilean politician of the Christian Democratic Party, a lawyer, professor and author, known for leading Chile’s transition from dictatorship to democracy as president from 1990 to 1994. A central figure in the coalition that defeated the plebiscite that would have extended Augusto Pinochet’s regime, Aylwin took part in the negotiations that enabled constitutional reforms essential to a peaceful transition.

His parliamentary career included multiple terms as senator and the presidency of the Senate in 1971; he led his party at various times, including during the years of military repression. As head of state, he confronted constitutional limits and the strong influence of the armed forces, yet worked to seek accountability for human rights violations and to restore democratic institutions.

The Aylwin administration prioritized social and economic policies aimed at reducing poverty and inequality: spending on health and education increased, tax reforms broadened public revenue, social programs were expanded and an ambitious housing program was launched. His legacy is associated with establishing the institutional and social foundations for the consolidation of contemporary Chilean democracy.
