About

Paul Bert was a prominent 19th-century French physician and physiologist whose work influenced respiratory physiology and altitude medicine. A professor in Bordeaux and at the Sorbonne, he investigated barometric pressure, the action of gases and toxins, anesthesia, and tissue vitality—studies that established him as an authority in experimental physiology. His work La Pression barométrique (1878) consolidated research on the effects of pressure and oxygen on animals and humans, earning scientific recognition and awards.

Beyond his scientific career, he took part in public life as a deputy and, briefly, as Minister of Public Instruction and Worship, advocating secular schooling and the expansion of education. In 1886 he was appointed representative to French Indochina; he died in Hanoi the same year.

Bert’s influence endures in respiratory medicine, aviation, and diving medicine—areas sometimes linked to the so-called “Paul Bert effect.” His pedagogical output also shaped scientific education in France, although some of his writings contain positions now considered controversial.
