About

Paul Edward Theroux is an American writer best known for his travel writing and for fiction with a strong autobiographical element. He rose to prominence with The Great Railway Bazaar (1975), which turned an epic rail journey across Eurasia into a genre classic, and established his reputation as a chronicler of landscapes, people and encounters, often shaded by irony or misanthropy.

In addition to travel books — including notable titles on China, the South Pacific and a crossing from Cairo to Cape Town — Theroux has published distinctive novels; The Mosquito Coast earned him the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1981 and was adapted for film. His work blends fiction and testimony, at times incorporating versions of himself, his family and acquaintances.

A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, he served in the Peace Corps and taught in Africa and Asia, experiences that informed much of his work. Known for sharp critiques of international aid practices and for literary profiles (notably of V. S. Naipaul), he has left a lasting mark on the travel-writing genre and contemporary anglophone literature.
