About

Paul Westphal was an American basketball player and coach whose NBA career highlighted the period from the 1970s into the 1990s. As a point guard he won a championship with the Boston Celtics in 1974 and played in the memorable 1976 Finals with the Phoenix Suns; he was a five-time All-Star and earned three All-NBA First Team selections. In Phoenix he became one of the franchise’s leading scorers, had his No. 44 retired and was named to the team’s Ring of Honor.

After retiring as a player, Westphal forged a significant coaching career: he led the Phoenix Suns, guiding them to the 1993 Finals with a roster that featured Charles Barkley and other key players, and he also coached the Seattle SuperSonics and Sacramento Kings in the NBA, along with successful stints in college basketball, where he won an NAIA national title with Grand Canyon College.

Acknowledged for his contributions to the sport, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019. He also worked as a commentator and executive, keeping a strong connection to basketball until his death in 2021.
