About

Pen Browning (Robert Wiedeman Barrett Browning) was a 19th-century English painter whose artistic career met with moderate success, but whose notoriety stems chiefly from being the son and heir of the celebrated poets Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Trained in Antwerp and Paris, he studied under figures such as Auguste Rodin and moved in the company of notable peers like John Singer Sargent. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Grosvenor Gallery and the salons of Paris and Brussels; critics acknowledged his “considerable ability and strength,” though his preference for voluptuous female nudes limited his sales in Victorian England.

Married to the American heiress Fannie Coddington, Browning bought and restored the Ca’ Rezzonico palace in Venice, where he lived for much of his life and where he received his father shortly before the elder Browning’s death in 1889. Financially independent, he painted for pleasure until he lost his sight. The couple had no children and their marriage deteriorated, producing episodes of scandal and separation.

On his death in 1912, the important collection of manuscripts and memorabilia of the poets that he had assembled was sold; later catalogued by scholars, that dispersal proved decisive in forming collections that preserved the Brownings’ legacy.
