Philippe Gaubert was a French musician renowned as a flutist, composer and conductor, and a central figure in French musical life between the world wars. Trained at the Conservatoire de Paris under Paul Taffanel, he built a career as a soloist at the Paris Opéra and in 1919 took on leading posts: flute professor at the Conservatoire (his students included Marcel Moyse), principal conductor of the Paris Opéra and conductor of the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire.
As a performer he took part in important premieres — notably the first performance of Maurice Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro — and left landmark recordings, including a notable rendition of César Franck’s Symphony in D minor. His compositional output was concentrated on pieces for flute and chamber ensembles, alongside orchestral works such as the Symphony in F (1936); he also published, in collaboration with Taffanel, a Méthode complète for flute (1923).
Recognized in his lifetime, he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1921. His legacy endures in the French flute pedagogy tradition, in his recordings and in the repertoire he helped expand for the instrument.
