Pierre Daura

About

Pierre Daura, born Pere Francesc Daura i Garcia, was a Catalan artist whose career spanned Europe and the United States. Trained at La Llotja in Barcelona, he studied with leading teachers of the period and soon joined Parisian artistic circles; he worked in Émile Bernard’s studio, studied printmaking, and took part in numerous European exhibitions during the 1920s and 1930s.

In the 1920s and 1930s he was notable as one of the founders and organizers of the Cercle et Carré group, a movement that promoted geometric construction and abstraction in opposition to Surrealism — Daura even designed the collective’s logo, now recognized in the history of modern art. His production included painting, sculpture, and applied arts, with collaborations on textiles and murals, despite an accident that impaired his left hand.

His personal and professional life combined architectural restoration (including the medieval house in Saint‑Cirq‑Lapopie), teaching, and work in the United States, where he settled during and after the Spanish Civil War and World War II. He fought for the Spanish Republic and later taught at American institutions, influencing generations of artists. His prolific output and lifelong commitment to artistic practice establish his legacy as a significant figure in the dialogue between the European avant‑garde and the transatlantic context of the twentieth century.
